The Contrast Specialist

VA panels get their name from how their liquid crystals align vertically (perpendicular to the panel) when no voltage is applied, blocking light more completely at rest than TN or IPS -- the direct source of their standout contrast ratio. VA is commonly credited to Fujitsu around 1996. Basic MVA (Multi-domain Vertical Alignment) and Samsung's PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment) lineage both subdivide each pixel into multiple domains to widen the effective viewing angle beyond what a single-domain VA cell could manage, with base contrast around 1000-1200:1 and more advanced variants like AMVA and SVA reaching 3000:1-5000:1.

The tradeoff for that contrast is response time, particularly in near-black-to-near-black transitions -- a widely reported real-world complaint where dark scene content can show visible trailing behind fast-moving objects, even on panels with otherwise respectable overall response times. VA's viewing-angle weakness also differs qualitatively from TN's: rather than color inversion, off-angle VA content typically shows "black crush," where shadow detail loses contrast and definition.
