A German Patent, Refined in Japan
IPS's underlying technology traces to a 1974 experimental patent and a key molecular-arrangement patent filed in Germany by Gunter Baur and colleagues at the Fraunhofer Society, granted in the US in January 1990. Hitachi engineers worked out how to manufacture it practically in 1992 and launched the first commercial "Super-IPS" panels in 1996 -- so "Hitachi, 1996," a commonly repeated shorthand, refers to the first commercial product, not the invention of the underlying technology, which predates Hitachi's involvement by roughly two decades.
IPS's defining strength is viewing angle -- 178 degrees horizontal and vertical is the standard modern spec, dramatically better than TN and meaningfully better than VA -- along with more consistent, accurate color reproduction, which is why nearly all LCD smartphone panels and most color-critical professional monitors use some form of IPS. Its known real-world quirk is "IPS glow," a pale, hazy glow visible on dark content at wide viewing angles that's sometimes mistaken for backlight bleed but is an inherent characteristic of the panel type rather than a manufacturing defect.
