A Twin Invention and a Patent Dispute
The twisted-nematic effect that gives this panel type its name was first observed by Charles-Victor Mauguin in 1911, but it took until 1970 for two separate research efforts to turn it into a practical display technology within months of each other. Wolfgang Helfrich and Martin Schadt, working at Hoffmann-La Roche in Switzerland, filed a Swiss patent on December 4, 1970 and published their results the following February; James Fergason, working independently at Westinghouse and later his own company ILIXCO in the US, filed a competing patent around the same time. The resulting priority dispute ran roughly three years before being settled out of court, with royalties shared between the parties -- a genuine dual-invention story rather than a single credited inventor.
TN's core tradeoff hasn't changed since: it's the fastest and least expensive panel type to manufacture, making it the default for budget monitors and competitive gaming displays that prioritize response time and high refresh rates over color accuracy or viewing angles. Its defining weakness is vertical viewing angle -- colors visibly wash out or invert when viewed from above or below, far more noticeably than side-to-side.
