An LCD Wearing an OLED-Adjacent Name
QLED is architecturally an LED-backlit LCD panel -- typically VA -- with a quantum-dot enhancement film placed between the LED backlight and the LCD layer. The quantum dots convert backlight light into more precisely tuned red, green, and blue wavelengths before it passes through the LCD's own color filters, improving color purity and gamut versus a conventional LED backlight. What QLED does not do is emit light from each pixel individually: it still requires a backlight, and it inherits the same local-dimming-zone and blooming characteristics as any other backlit LCD, unlike OLED's true per-pixel black.
Samsung introduced QLED branding at CES 2017 (rebranding its earlier "SUHD" line) and formed a marketing alliance with Hisense and TCL a few months later. The name's similarity to OLED became a real point of dispute: LG filed a complaint with South Korea's Fair Trade Commission in September 2019 arguing QLED branding misleadingly implied self-emission, while Samsung pointed to earlier rulings by advertising-standards bodies in Australia and the UK that had found the branding not misleading. Samsung and LG mutually withdrew their complaints in June 2020 without a formal ruling.
