A 1987 Kodak Discovery
The first practical OLED device was built by Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke at Eastman Kodak, published in Applied Physics Letters on September 21, 1987 -- work that grew out of research Tang had begun at Kodak in the 1970s. Unlike every LCD variant, which shutters light from a separate backlight, each OLED pixel is its own light source and can switch off completely, producing genuinely black pixels rather than a very dark grey, and switching state fast enough that response time is measured in fractions of a millisecond (LG cites under 0.01ms) rather than the several milliseconds typical of LCD.
That same organic material is also OLED's core long-term weakness: screen burn-in and gradual brightness degradation are real, documented characteristics, not a myth. Blue OLED subpixels degrade faster than red and green, gradually shifting a panel's color balance over years of use, and oxygen or moisture ingress can separately cause localized dark-spot degradation -- both inherent to organic emissive material aging, not manufacturing defects.
