A Different Path to Color
QD-OLED starts from a blue OLED emitter and converts that light to red and green using a quantum-dot layer, rather than LG's WOLED approach of emitting white light and subtracting unwanted wavelengths through color filters. Because quantum-dot conversion loses less light than filter absorption, QD-OLED panels can achieve a wider color volume -- meaningfully more saturated color at high brightness -- than traditional WOLED, the technology's main practical selling point according to reviewers who have tested early panels.
Samsung Display began QD-OLED production in November 2021, with Sony (the A95K) and Samsung Electronics (the S95B) both announcing QD-OLED TVs in early 2022 -- Sony's announcement came first, on January 4, 2022, though both used Samsung Display-manufactured panels.
