More, Smaller Zones

Mini-LED describes the backlight sitting behind an LCD panel, not the panel itself -- it can be paired with IPS, VA, or any other LCD alignment mode. The defining change from traditional LED backlighting is scale: Mini-LED chips are commonly cited in the 0.1-0.2mm range, versus roughly 0.5-1mm for older LED backlight chips, letting manufacturers pack in far more individually-dimmable zones. Real products illustrate the range: Apple's 2021 iPad Pro uses over 10,000 mini-LEDs across 2,596 dimming zones, while LG's UltraGear evo GM9 gaming monitor uses 9,216 LEDs across 2,304 zones -- entry-level Mini-LED TVs typically have far fewer zones than flagship models.

More, smaller dimming zones mean brighter highlights and darker blacks can sit closer together on screen with less of the "blooming" halo effect that coarser LED backlighting produces around bright objects on a dark background. TCL brought Mini-LED backlighting to TVs first, in 2019, with Samsung and LG following; Apple extended it to tablets and laptops starting with the 2021 iPad Pro.
