The Real Next Step -- At a Steep Price
Micro-LED is architecturally similar to OLED in the way that matters most -- every pixel is its own light source, switching off completely for true black with no backlight required -- but built from microscopic inorganic LED material instead of OLED's organic compounds. That inorganic material is inherently more stable: it doesn't carry OLED's burn-in and gradual brightness-degradation risk, and can achieve higher peak brightness.
The underlying research dates to 2000, from Hongxing Jiang and Jingyu Lin's group at Kansas State University; the first active-matrix, video-capable Micro-LED display followed in 2009 at VGA resolution, and Sony showed its first commercial-scale demonstration in 2012. Today Micro-LED remains an ultra-premium, largely modular technology -- Samsung's "The Wall" and similar commercial video-wall products from Sony and Konka, priced far beyond mainstream consumer displays. Watch for marketing that borrows the name without the substance: some TV lineups branded around "Micro RGB" or similar naming actually use individually-colored Mini-LED backlighting behind a conventional LCD panel -- not true self-emissive Micro-LED -- the same kind of naming conflation that also affects QLED.
