Phase-Based Ranging (PBR) Physics
Traditional Bluetooth distance estimation relied on Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), which is notoriously unreliable due to physical obstructions and multipath fading. Channel Sounding uses Phase-Based Ranging (PBR), where two devices transmit tones across multiple stepped frequencies in the 2.4 GHz band and measure the resulting phase shift difference Deltaphi, calculating distance deterministically via signal wavelength.
RTT Combination and Relay Attack Protection
To eliminate the phase ambiguity inherent in periodic sine waves and defend against signal-manipulation attacks, Channel Sounding interleaves PBR with Time-of-Flight (RTT) packet exchanges. By injecting cryptographically randomized Sounding Sequences, the protocol is designed to make it computationally infeasible for relay attackers to fraudulently simulate proximity, allowing Bluetooth to rival Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for CCC Digital Key applications.
