Type A is the ungrounded 2-flat-pin plug standard in North America, Central America, and Japan -- NEMA 1-15, rated 15A/125V. It's a physical subset of Type B: any Type A plug fits directly into a Type B socket, the ground pin recess simply unused.
Type B

Type B adds a round grounding pin to Type A's two flat blades -- NEMA 5-15, the most common outlet in North America. The ground pin is deliberately longer than the power blades, so it connects before and disconnects after them, a safety-sequencing feature shared with several other grounded plug types worldwide.
Type C

Type C, the "Europlug," is the most widely accepted plug in the world by country count -- 2 round, slightly tapered pins, ungrounded, rated just 2.5A/250V. Its flexible pins give it a secure friction-fit in sockets built for several other, larger round-pin standards.
Type D

Type D is the old British 5A standard (BS 546, 1934) -- three large round pins in a triangle. It predates and is completely incompatible with the UK's later Type G, and remains the primary domestic standard in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka today.
Type E

Type E is the French/Belgian standard -- unusually, its round grounding pin is fixed in the socket, not the plug. It's used across France, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, and Czechia, and a hybrid CEE 7/7 plug design bridges it with the incompatible German Type F.
Type F (Schuko)

Type F, universally called "Schuko" (German for "protective contact"), is the dominant grounded plug across continental Europe. Unlike most grounded plugs, its earth connection is made via two flat spring clips on the plug's sides rather than a third pin.
Type G

Type G, the British standard (BS 1363, 1947), is the only common plug type with a fuse built into every single plug -- protecting the appliance's cord, not just the household circuit. It's used across the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and much of the Gulf.
Type H

Type H is Israel's own standard, used almost nowhere else -- one of the most geographically limited plug types in the world. A 1989 round-pin revision replaced the original flat-pin design, and modern sockets accept both, plus the ungrounded Europlug.
Type I

Type I, the Australian/New Zealand standard, uses two flat pins angled in a V-shape plus a flat earth pin. China and Argentina use dimensionally similar but genuinely incompatible variants -- Chinese plugs don't physically fit, and Argentine plugs fit but with reversed polarity.
Type J

Type J is Switzerland's own standard -- three round pins in a small hexagonal-bodied plug, in 10A and 16A variants. Its design directly influenced Brazil's and South Africa's later Type N standards, though reversed polarity during adaptation broke compatibility with its own descendants.
Type K

Type K is Denmark's standard -- two round power pins plus a separate round earth pin mounted on the plug, offset from center. Used exclusively in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands; EU accession has allowed Schuko (Type F) sockets in Danish homes since the early 1990s.
Type L

Type L, Italy's standard, uses three round pins in a straight line rather than a triangle, in two incompatible sizes (10A and 16A). Chile and Uruguay use the same physical design, though no independently confirmed national standard document defines it in either country.
Type M

Type M is South Africa's large-pin standard -- the 15A variant of the same BS 546 family that produces Type D at 5A. The two share a triangular 3-round-pin layout and standard lineage but use different pin sizes, so they are not physically interchangeable.
Type N

Type N is used in two places -- Brazil and South Africa -- but they are genuinely different implementations, not one standard: Brazil's NBR 14136 uses two different pin-diameter variants and skips a shutter requirement that South Africa's SANS 164-2 (closer to the source IEC 60906-1 spec) includes.
Type O
5 specs
Type O is Thailand's standard, introduced in 2006 -- three round pins whose earth-pin offset happens to numerically match Type B's, letting Thailand's real-world hybrid sockets also accept American Type A/B and European Type C plugs. Pure single-standard Type O outlets barely exist in practice.
