ISO Newton Performance Tiers & Automatic Inflaters
- 1 Newton = 0.2248 lbf (10 N ≈ 1 kg / 2.2 lbs of positive buoyant lift in water): Level 50 N vests (e.g. for kayaking, waterskiing) are buoyancy aids that require active swimming ability and do not turn an unconscious face up. Level 150 N and 275 N lifejackets are designed with asymmetrical chest flotation chambers that automatically roll an unconscious victim face-up in under 5 seconds, keeping the mouth 12 cm clear of surface waves.
- Hydrostatic vs. Water-Soluble Inflators: Automatic inflatables use either a cellulose bobbin that dissolves upon water contact (Halkey-Roberts) or a hydrostatic pressure valve (Hammar MA1) that triggers inflation only when submerged 10 cm underwater, preventing false activations from ocean spray or rain.
