Binders & Hole Punching

Binder Ring Mechanisms (manufactured in Round Ring, Straight D-Ring, and Slanted Angle D-Ring profiles) are mechanical document holding spines sized by internal ring diameter from 0.5 inches (13 mm / 100 sheets) up to 4.0 inches (102 mm / 900 sheets). D-rings hold up to 25% more pages than round rings of the same nominal size by stacking pages against a flat vertical spine.

The Filofax 6-Hole Standard (invented by Norman & Hill in London in 1921) is the global benchmark for personal ring planners, organizing 6 holes into two distinct 3-hole groups spaced 19.05 mm (0.75 in) apart. Available in standardized Personal (51 mm gap), A5 (70 mm gap), and Pocket (19 mm continuous) formats.

ISO 838 (DIN 821) is the international standard for 2-hole paper punching, specifying two circular holes spaced exactly 80.0 mm ± 0.5 mm apart with a diameter of 6.0 mm ± 0.5 mm, positioned 12.0 mm ± 1.0 mm from the binding edge of the sheet. It is the universal standard for ring binders and lever arch files across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The ISO 838 4-Hole extension (commonly known in Europe as the '888' format) specifies four holes spaced at three consecutive 80.0 mm intervals (80–80–80 mm, spanning 240.0 mm total) with standard 6.0 mm hole diameters. It is standard for heavy A4 4-ring presentation binders and archival document protectors to prevent page sagging.

The Japanese Loose-Leaf standard (governed by JIS P 0138) specifies a fine multi-hole grid with an exact 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) pitch and 5.5 mm hole diameter, featuring 26 holes for B5 paper and 30 holes for A4 paper. Engineered by stationery manufacturers such as Kokuyo and Maruman, it eliminates paper tear-out entirely.

The US 2-Hole Top Punch (standardized at 2.75 inches / 69.85 mm center-to-center spacing) is the North American standard for punching the short top edge of US Letter or US Legal documents. Paired with 2-prong metal fasteners, heavy classification pressboard folders, and clipboard arches, it is standard for medical charts and legal court exhibits.

The North American 3-Hole Standard is the ubiquitous paper punching system in the United States, Canada, and Mexico for 8.5 × 11-inch US Letter paper. Specifying three circular holes spaced exactly 4.25 inches (107.95 mm) apart (an 8.5-inch total span) with 5/16-inch (7.94 mm) hole diameters, it is the standard for 3-ring school and business binders.
