WCDMA and Spread Spectrum Physics
Unlike GSM's rigid frequency and time slicing, 3G UMTS allowed all users in a cell to transmit simultaneously across the same 5 MHz carrier frequency. Each transmission is multiplied by a unique Pseudo-Random Noise (PN) spreading code (Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor / OVSF), enabling the receiver to extract the desired signal from background interference (Soft Handover).
HSPA and the Smartphone Era
High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA, 3.5G) introduced adaptive modulation (16-QAM/64-QAM), fast Hybrid ARQ error correction, and 2ms short sub-frames. By achieving 14.4 to 42 Mbps data rates, HSPA+ provided the high-speed data foundation for the early smartphone revolution (iPhone, Android) before the migration to 4G LTE.
