Why '1-Inch' Does Not Measure 1 Inch
The '1-inch' sensor diagonal is 15.86 mm (0.62 in), not 25.4 mm (1.0 inch). This naming persists from 1950s TV broadcasting: a 1-inch vacuum vidicon tube had a glass envelope with an outside diameter of 1 inch, but its internal light-sensitive target area was only 16 mm diagonal. Sensor manufacturers retain these historical 'optical format' tube inch equivalents.
