Why Canon Chose 1.6×
In the early 2000s, Canon built dedicated semiconductor fabrication lines for its proprietary CMOS image sensors. Choosing a 22.2 × 14.8 mm die size maximized the number of functional dies yielded per silicon wafer, lowering production costs for early DSLRs like the EOS 10D and Digital Rebel (300D). As a result, a 50 mm lens on Canon APS-C provides an effective field of view of 80.0 mm (50 × 1.6) rather than the 75 mm of Sony/Nikon/Fuji (50 × 1.5).
