HDMI 1.0, released December 9, 2002 by a group of seven consumer electronics companies, was the original single-cable digital audio/video connector. It carried up to 4.95 Gbps over TMDS signaling -- enough for 1080p at 60Hz -- replacing separate analog video and digital audio cables with one connector.
HDMI 2.0, released September 4, 2013, raised maximum bandwidth to 18 Gbps, finally enabling 4K resolution at 60Hz. It also increased maximum audio to 32 channels; HDR support followed later via the HDMI 2.0a update in 2015, not the original 2.0 release.
