HDMI 1.0 vs. HDMI 1.4
Comparing 2 standards across 7 specifications. 7 key differences identified.
HDMI 1.0, released December 9, 2002 by a group of seven consumer electronics companies, was the original single-cable digital audio/video connector. It carried up to 4.95 Gbps over TMDS signaling -- enough for 1080p at 60Hz -- replacing separate analog video and digital audio cables with one connector.
HDMI 1.4, released in 2009, added the HDMI Ethernet Channel, Audio Return Channel (ARC), and stereoscopic 3D video support, plus a 4K mode -- but capped at 24-30Hz, since bandwidth stayed at 10.2 Gbps. The even smaller Type D Micro connector was also introduced.
