The 6 GHz Spectrum Breakthrough
Wi-Fi 6E represents the largest expansion of unlicensed RF spectrum since the FCC opened the 5 GHz band in 1997. By adding up to 1.2 GHz of spectrum between 5.925 GHz and 7.125 GHz, Wi-Fi 6E solves channel congestion.
Unlike 5 GHz, where wide 160 MHz channels frequently overlap with military and meteorological radar requiring Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) channel evacuation, 6 GHz is clean spectrum with zero DFS requirements.
Regulatory Variations (US vs EU)
Spectrum allocation varies globally: the US FCC, Canada, and South Korea opened the full 1,200 MHz (allowing seven 160 MHz channels), whereas the European Union (CEPT) and UK approved the lower 480 MHz (5.945–6.425 GHz, allowing three 160 MHz channels). Wi-Fi 6E devices enforce WPA3 security unconditionally.
