DDR4's spec was finalized in September 2012, though it didn't reach the commercial market until 2014. It moved to a 288-pin DIMM and 260-pin SO-DIMM, dropped voltage to 1.2V, and started at a minimum of 2133 MT/s -- roughly double DDR3's starting point.

A Two-Year Gap Between Spec and Shelf
JEDEC finalized the DDR4 specification in September 2012, but the standard didn't reach commercial products until 2014 -- ECC server modules arrived first, in the second quarter, with consumer non-ECC modules following in the third quarter. That two-year gap between a memory standard's paper specification and its market arrival is worth knowing, since it's easy to conflate the two dates.
DDR4 moved to a new 288-pin desktop DIMM and 260-pin laptop SO-DIMM, tightening pin spacing to 0.5mm from DDR3's 0.6mm, and dropped standard operating voltage to 1.2V. JEDEC's official range runs from DDR4-1600 up to DDR4-3200, though commercially available modules -- particularly overclocked, enthusiast-marketed kits -- have reached speeds around DDR4-4800, well above the base specification.
