Why 12V-2x6 Replaced the Original 12VHPWR Connector
Early 12VHPWR connectors experienced thermal melting when users failed to insert the connector 100% flush into the GPU:
- In 12VHPWR, the sense pins were flush with power pins, allowing the GPU to draw full 600W even when slightly unseated (creating severe terminal resistance heating).
- In 12V-2x6 (ATX 3.1): The 4 sense pins are recessed 1.7 mm deeper. If the plug is pulled out by even 1 mm, the sense pins disconnect first, instantly cutting high-amperage power before terminal arcing can occur.
