A Slim Cell for Key Fobs
The CR1616 sits at the smaller end of the IEC 60086-3 lithium coin cell range, with its 16mm diameter and thin 1.6mm profile making it a natural fit for the compact remote-control fobs used in automotive keyless entry systems, where internal space is tight. It shares its diameter with the slightly thicker CR1620, both following the same naming logic -- the first two digits give the 16mm diameter, the trailing digits give thickness in tenths of a millimeter.
The format has also seen some use as a save-game backup battery in older handheld game cartridges, powering the onboard memory that retains save data when the cartridge is removed from the console.
