Side-by-Side Comparison Anchors & Plugs

Expansion Wall Plugs vs. Wedge Anchors

Comparing 2 standards across 12 specifications. 12 key differences identified.

Comparing:
Expansion Wall Plugs
Wedge Anchors

The Plastic Expansion Wall Plug (Rawlplug / Fischer S-Plug / Dowel) is a split cylindrical nylon or polyethylene sleeve inserted into a pre-drilled masonry hole. When a wood or sheet metal screw is driven inside, the tapered internal profile wedges the split halves outward, generating strong radial expansion friction against solid concrete, brick, or stone.

The Concrete Wedge Anchor (Through-Bolt / Expansion Stud Anchor / Trubolt) is a heavy-duty structural masonry fastener consisting of a solid threaded steel stud with a reverse-tapered conical mandrel and an independent stainless steel expansion clip collar. Driven into solid cured concrete, tightening the upper nut draws the mandrel up into the clip, locking the anchor permanently under thousands of pounds of structural load.

Specification Comparison Table

12 Parameters
Parameter / Spec
Expansion Mechanism
Screw core forces 2 or 4 split ribbed plastic wings radially against hole walls Tapered conical stud mandrel expands stainless steel clip ring into concrete borehole
Primary Applications
Wall shelves, curtain rods, electrical panels, bathroom mirrors, light fixtures Automotive 2-post lifts, structural steel column baseplates, seismic heavy machinery hold-downs
Standard Sizing Convention
Outer Diameter × Length (e.g. 6×30 mm, 8×40 mm, 10×50 mm)
Standard Drill Bit Sizing
Drill bit diameter matches plug outer diameter exactly (e.g. 6 mm plug = 6.0 mm masonry bit)
Standard Substrates
Solid concrete, solid clay brick, natural stone, aerated block
Anti-Rotation Features
Molded longitudinal external ribs / anti-spin fins that bite into the masonry borehole
Common Safe Shear Load (Concrete)
6mm plug: ~30–50 kg (65–110 lbs) / 8mm plug: ~70–100 kg (150–220 lbs)
Structural Certification
ICC-ES (International Code Council) cracked & uncracked concrete approval / ACI 318
Anchor Diameter Range
1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1" (or M6, M8, M10, M12, M16, M20, M24)
Substrate Limitation
Solid uncracked/cracked cured concrete ONLY (Unsuitable for brick, hollow block, or mortar)
Installation Style
'Through-fixture' installation (Drill hole directly through the metal baseplate into concrete)
Ultimate Tension Capacity (1/2" Anchor)
4,000 to 6,500+ lbs (18 to 29 kN) in 4,000 psi concrete
