Why Wedge Anchors Fail in Brick and Cinder Blocks
Wedge anchors function through extreme outward radial expansion pressure applied by a small steel collar over a tapered mandrel at the bottom of the shank:
- Solid Concrete Hoop Stress: High-strength solid concrete (3,000–5,000 psi) possesses the compressive hoop strength to contain this wedge force.
- Blowout in Cinder Block / Brick: Hollow CMU blocks and clay bricks have thin (1.0–1.25 in) tensile-weak face shells; tightening a wedge anchor immediately shatters the brick or hollow core. Sleeve anchors, toggle bolts, or adhesive mesh screens must be used in hollow masonry.
