Combating Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI)

Modern Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) engines operate at high boost pressures at low engine speeds (1,500–2,500 RPM). Traditional calcium detergent additives in motor oil could dropletize into the cylinder and ignite the air-fuel mixture prematurely, causing catastrophic Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) that shatters pistons and bends connecting rods. API SP and SN PLUS replace calcium with magnesium-based detergent chemistry, eliminating LSPI events.
